ELKHART COUNTY -- A new wave of tourists could make Elkhart County their vacation destination. A new development is in the works called the American Countryside Holiday Resort. It would set up shop next to the Farmer's Market. Developers say this is a first of its kind venture in the U.S. and that plans have been in place for years. "The location from a geographical point is ideal," said developer Robert Weijhenke. The American Countryside Holiday Resort is slated to go up on 200 acres of land, just east of the Farmers Market near U.S. 20 and County Road 26. County Commissioners approved the use of 10 million dollars in federal stimulus money Monday to get the project started. "The allocation of the 10 million dollars in recovery bonds is going to support the project, will provide a level of comfort with other investors that are coming on board," said project developer Diederik Advocaat. It is set up to be a year-round destination for family vacations. It will have 600 villas to stay in, an enclosed tropical water park, shopping, restaurants, a spa and sport facilities. It would be the first resort of its kind in the country; It's based on existing developments in Europe.  Link
