Safety Awards

The ICA Safety Awards annual application deadline is
generally July 31st. Each year the application for this award is mailed to ICA member contractors and subcontractors in early to mid June.

The ICA Safety Awards Program – a program that recognizes ICA member general contractors, prime contractors, construction managers and subcontractors for their commitment to excellence in employee and jobsite safety.

This program was developed by a task force composed of three building contractors, three highway, heavy and utility contractors, one insurance industry representative and a representative of the safety consulting industry. The goal was to create a unique safety awards program – one that evaluates the overall safety program of each applicant. What sets the ICA Safety Program Awards apart from the rest is that it doesn't
rely solely on numbers, checklists and written descriptions of
safety programs alone. Confidential feedback collected from onsite
workers and supervisors will play a major role in determining how good each company's safety program is, and how well it is carried out on a daily basis – making the ICA Safety Program Awards a unique program.

Each participating ICA member must select one of the following nine (9) award categories based upon onsite hours worked in Indiana:

  • Small Contractor – any under 100,000 hours
  • Highway, Heavy and Utility Prime Contractor under 300,000 hours
  • Highway, Heavy and Utility Prime Contractor over 300,000 hours
  • Highway, Heavy and Utility Subcontractor under 300,000 hours
  • Highway, Heavy and Utility Subcontractor over 300,000 hours
  • Building General Contractor/Construction Manager under 300,000 hours
  • Building General Contractor/Construction Manager over 300,000 hours
  • Building Subcontractor under 300,000 hours
  • Building Subcontractor over 300,000 hours

One ICA Gold Summit Safety Award could be presented in each of the nine categories. Those who receive an ICA Gold Summit Safety Award will become finalists for the overall ICA Pinnacle Safety Award – ICA's highest annual award for safety achievement.

Award winners will be determined by the Awards Selection Committee – an independent panel of industry leaders. To ensure fairness in the selection process, all identifying information, such as company name, address, hours worked, etc. will be removed from the collected information before being provided to the Awards Selection Committee.

An ICA Safety Awards ceremony will be held during the annual ICA Membership Meeting to honor the award winners. In addition, the ICA Pinnacle Award winner will give a presentation of their safety program (typically in February) so that members can learn why the program has been so successful. Our goal is to provide our membership with an opportunity to learn much more about the safety program that earned the prestigious ICA Pinnacle Award.

A key aspect of this awards program is the consideration of the anonymous responses to our survey questions submitted by a random selection of the onsite workers and supervisors of each participating contractor. The responses are a direct reflection of their opinions and knowledge of how well their employer’s safety program is understood and, more importantly, implemented at the field level. In the final analysis, we want the ICA Safety Awards process to be educational and provide a learning opportunity for all ICA members. Therefore, several weeks following the ICA Safety Awards ceremony, the following educational documents will be distributed to participating companies:

  1) a summary of their onsite workers and supervisor survey responses (de-identified to ensure that
onsite workers and supervisor responses remain confidential), which will allow contractors the
opportunity to identify areas of their safety programs that are strong and areas that could be
      improved;
  2) a compilation of all onsite worker survey responses and a compilation of all supervisor survey
responses received from all applicants; and
  3) a list of safety best practices gathered from the applicants during the evaluation process.

Items 2 and 3 will be made available to all ICA members.
